CQ21 Quest3 Necromancer

Quest Three: The Necromancer

Leaving a semi-tamed baby sea dragon to guard the ship, Brantus, Captain of the Mermaids Tear, and his three hired henchwomen, Li the civilised barbarian, Ursula the Nature Witch, Archer the Archer, arrive at an island.

They go into an Inn and ask if anyone knows of anyone whose initials are T.N.

The locals think about it and suggest it might be the old necromancer from a few hundred years ago whose scary old lair is up on the hill over that way. When the old, old King found out about the necromancer doing evil magic, he sent some guards to kill him. The guards never came back.

The adventurers enter through a large stone double-door slightly ajar into a large, gloomy room.

There are groaning, moaning sounds coming out of the dark. Zombies!

Li charges toward the nearest zombie waving her greatsword around. The zombie knocks her out with one hit.

Archer shoots arrow over the unconscious Li through zombies head and pins it to the wall. The zombie body hangs from the wall by its forehead. The clunk of it hitting the wall makes two other zombies aware. They stagger from the gloom toward the adventurers.

Ursula moves between the zombies and another they hadn’t seen and casts her Life magic spell. The zombies turn to ash.

Archer and Brantus wake Li up. She is weak from being knocked out.

They go into the next room. There is nothing there. Flagstone tiles on the floor. Stone bricks for the walls. Stone ceiling.

“Well this is crap let’s go home.” Says Brantus.

“Not so fast!” Says the witch. “Let’s search the place first. There might be a secret door or lever.”

They do not find any such thing. What they do find is an engraving.

‘Narshal Lew Kalinargh Eeskinlew inchongerai’

They all take turns trying to pronounce the words. Then they have a short debate about whether that is four words of twenty four words.

“You know what we need?” Says Brantus. “We need an expert on ancient language to come here and have a look at this for us.”

“Or we could remember it and ask around.”

“What we need is a quill and ink set to copy it down.”

The witch interrupts. “Wait a minute, I think this is an ancient language I read about before. I recognise some of it.”

“Which bit?”

“The bit which reads right to left or the bit which reads left to right?”

“It says, ‘speak a ....dle and ... doo ... appear.”

“Speak a doodle and a doodle will appear. Simple. Genius. Thanks sister.”

Witch blushes.

“It might be speak a piddle and a doofer will appear.”

“If you piss in the room, a doohickey will appear. No somehow I don’t believe an ancient necromancer would’ve casting toilet spells to access his lair. Imagine the sorts of people he would have to be dealing with if that were the case.”

“Riddle?”

“Not now we’re busy trying to translate this, uh, ah ye that might be it.”

“Okay I know a riddle.”

They search the area again and suddenly hear an echo of a voice, say;

“What is very tall,

but doesn’t grow.

Taller than trees,

up up up it goes.”

Brantus looks embarrassed.

Luckily it’s dark so the women do not see what his mind is thinking of.

Luckily for all of them because an awkward silence as they all pause for thought.

“Where did that voice come from?” Asks Archer.

“I heard it too.”

“We all did.”

“Tall but doesn’t grow. Stairs?”

“The sky?”

They hold their torches up to examine the ceiling overhead.

“Stones?”

“A mountain!” Says Li.

All of a sudden the wall moves.

With a scary grinding sound.

A long tunnel is revealed directly opposite the entrance.

“Well now we’ve done it.”

“You go first.” Orders Brantus.

A small square room with another doorway not quite opposite.

A tunnel which bends to the right and then to the left and then quickly to the right and left again and straight ahead.

Two more zombies.

Archer shoots one through the head and pins it to the wall the same as the last time.

Brantus charges forward and sees another zombie which was hiding in the dark. He decapitates the zombie he had charged at.

Behind the zombies is a tunnel with an offshoot to the left and a small room at the far end.

Li runs over to attack the third zombie with her greatsword. The zombie is split down its middle into two relatively equal size pieces.

Li wipes her sword clean on the zombie rags while Archer retrieved her arrow. The zombie slumps to the ground.

The offshoot tunnel has a door at the end.

Brantus instructs Li and Archer to search the small room. They find a magic staff of destruction. It has ‘magic staff of destruction’ engraved on it along with instructions for use. ‘You hold it, you charge it up, and a firebolt shoots out of its tip.’

“Hm. Useful.” Says everybody.

Because Li is injured and also has the highest Brawn score when she is not inhured, the party decide she can carry it for now.

The party open the door and find themselves directly opposite another door with a very long tunnel wide enough for two people to stand side by side, on their right, disappearing into darkness.

“Open that door.” Says Brantus.

Li opens the door with Archer to her right, Brantus behind her, Ursula to his right.

A small room with three zombies. A zombie knocks Li out again. She falls into Brantus who falls over underneath her.

“Shut that door!” Says Brantus.

Archer shoots the zombie with her hardwood bow. The arrow goes through its head, knocks it back, the arrow goes through a zombies head behind it, both of them are pinned to the wall, dead.

“Nice shot!” Says Ursula. Ursula shuts the door.

Brantus stands up. “Not sure if our civilised barbarian is all she’s cut out to be. That’s twice she’s fallen asleep on duty in the last... how long have we been in here anyway?”

Ursula casts healing magic on Li. Li wakes up feeling refreshed.

The zombie pulls at the door from its side of the door to open it. Ursula pulls on the from her side of the door to shut it. The door flies open and smacks into Ursula who falls over.

Archer shoots the zombie and misses.

Li charges at the zombie with her greatsword held out like a spear. The zombie dodges her attack and whacks her as she passes.

Ursula gets up.

Brantus says “Do something!”

Archer says “What does it look like we’re doing?”

Zombie hits Li with its axe. Li up-slashes the zombie diagonally with her greatsword, kills it.

Ursula casts healing in Li, again.

The party moves up the long corridor. At the far end is a door with an eye. They hear a voice again.

“Speak the answer to the riddle and you may enter.”

“Mountain!” Says Brantus.

The door opens. Behind it is a massive badass Lair of the Necromancer main worship room. There is a necromancer standing in a stone circle in the middle of the room, meditating in the lotus position while floating one foot in the air.

“Excuse me sir, you wouldn’t have happened to have seen any necromancers around here would you?” Asks Brantus.

“Why have you come into my home, destroyed my people, barged in and interrupted my meditation?” Asks the floating necromancer.

“We are looking for a necromancer whose name begins T.N. who sent us a message.”

“I have been awaiting your arrival.” He stops floating and turns around for them to see he is a skeleton.

Ursula gets ready her Life Spell to try and destroy the foul undead creature.

“Before you do anything rash, I want to tell you, I know about the ring and the trident. I can teach you how to use your new weapons. You must do only one favour for me. Retrieve my body from the sacred barrow of the south.”

“Okay.” Says Brantus.

“I shall be awaiting you. Farewell.” The necromancer disappears into thin air.

All of a sudden they are back at the tavern!

As they materialise they hear his voice say, “I shall be watching you!”

“Hey, we didn’t even get a chance to raid his workshop!” Complains Li.

“Are we going to do his mission?” Asks Archer.

“I’m going to have a drink.” Says Brantus. He orders a round of drinks from the bar.

End of Quest Three

CQ21 Quest2 Mutiny

Quest Two : Mutiny!

Midnight.

Witch is awake training the dragon “no no no don’t set fire to that!” It’s Archers watch but Ursula sends her to bed because she’s tired.

Morning.

They decide to stop at a fruit tree island for water and lunch. In the distance they see a ship approach and sink.

No sign of where it sank. No survivors.

A few hours later.

The same ship approaches! They watch it sink again.

A few hours later it comes up out of the water next to the ship.

Onboard are a skeleton crew!

The undead use ropes to leap over and attack.

Archer one hits a skeleton and throws its skull in the sea. The body crawls after the skull over the edge of the ship.

Skeleton knocks Witch Ursula clean out.

Baby Sea Dragon is whacked and flutters into the air above the skeletons ship.

Brantus is winded by a skeleton.

Archer runs over to save Ursula by dragging her away from the edge of the ship as

Skeletons begin climbing up the side of the ship out of the water!

A skeleton grabs the edge of the ship with one hand and Ursula with the other to tug the witch out of Archers hands! Archer kicks the skeletons head at the same time. Stalemate!

Another skeleton grabs at Brantus! He kicks its head off into the sea.

Li smashes a skeleton with her greatsword, breaking some of its bones as its head flies into the water.

More skeletons leap from their ghost ship onto the characters ship.

Baby Sea Dragon regains it’s senses and flames one of the skeletons. Skeleton is totally unharmed. Luckily the ship does not catch fire.

Li and Archer grab Ursula and pull hard. Skeletons arm is ripped from its shoulder. It falls into the water and cracks its head on the side of the ship. And sinks. Ursula is still unconscious.

Brantus is knocked unconscious by the nearest skeleton who tries to push him into the water. Fortunately Brantus is fat and stocky so this is not so easy for the skeleton. Another skeleton joins its attempt.

Baby sea dragon swoops at the cursed ship to knock a skeleton into the water however the enchantment of the cursed ship knocks the dragon backward before it can get close.

Li attacks skeleton which is deflected, skeleton kicks Li in the shin. Ouch.

Archer smashes a skeleton to splinters with his bow hefted up through its rib cage. The remains of the skeleton topple into the water.

Archer kicks a skeleton and shatters its ribs, decapitates it with a swing of his hardwood bow and kicks it into the sea.

Li chops the last skeleton on their ship with her greatsword. It’s bits are also thrown overboard.

There is one skeleton remaining, on the ghost ship.  It’s the captain. He jumps backward into the water at the far end of his ship and a moment later emerges in a splash of water from the far side of the characters ship, lands on the deck and attacks captain Brantus! Captain Brantus is knocked out!

Archer smashes the skeleton captains arms off with her hardwood bow and then knocks its head off.

The ghosts ship sinks.

Li runs over and cleaves the skeleton captains skull into two. Just to make sure. It splits like a coconut in two equal parts.

Ursula wakes up.

On the middle finger of the skeletons arm is a glowing ring, dimly glowing like an aura.

Ursula examines the ring. She has never seen anything like it before.

As she puts it into her pocket, the ocean around them chimes, then the water goes dark blue.

A Kraken has been attracted by all the mayhem! It approaches one side of the ship.

Brantus is still unconscious.

The kraken has wrapped two of its tentacles on the ship.

The dragon discovers it has a cut on its left wing and cannot fly.

Li slashes at the Kraken with her mighty greatsword. The kraken shoved her back hard and knocks her unconscious with blood all over face.

Archer shoots the kraken with her hardwood bow. The arrow sinks into the writhing tentacled mass. The great beast flinches.

Dragon blasts a fiery breath at close range into the krakens face. It flinches.

Brantus makes a groaning sound as he groggily begins to wake up.

The witch Ursula runs over to Li to use her nature magic to heal the warrior woman’s wound. Li remains unconscious although her bleeding stops.

Kraken grabs at Archer who looses another arrow which sticks through the monsters tentacle.

At the same time the kraken reaches for Brantus who is still only just getting up. The Captain rolls out of the tentacles way just in time. Brantus climbs to his feet.

The dragon has another fiery blast at the krakens face. Unfortunately he misses entirely due to pain in its wing.

Archer fires another arrow. The kraken deflects the arrow out of the sky. It lands in the water.

Brantus runs over and chops the kraken with his sword but the kraken grabs his wrist and rips the sword from his hand. The kraken throws the sword at Brantus, luckily the weapons hilt hits the sea captain and not the blade.

Li wakes up and gets to her feet.

Ursula casts a healing spell on the dragons injured wing. It’s wound slowly heals, the flesh covers up the cut until it is no longer there.

The kraken slaps Li who steps back with a hugely stinging face.

Li launches herself ferociously at the kraken, with her greatsword out like a lance, she simply runs into it to skewer the sea monster. She also lets out a terrible scream of rage. Her sword plunges deep into the creature. She steps back pulling the blade out with her even against the krakens bodies natural suction.

Archer fires another arrow. The arrow pierces the krakens eye. The kraken let’s out the most shriekiest shriek of all shrieks.

The kraken pulls out all the arrows and slowly falls back into the water.

Brantus grabs one of its tentacles. “Come on don’t let it escape!” The kraken slaps him away and sinks below the waves.

The water returns to its normal colour. The kraken is still alive but it has been defeated for now.

Everybody cheers.

A Few Days Later

The ship arrives at an outpost. A courier runs up toward the crew and gives them a letter. The courier says “Someone is paying me good money for you to have this. Don’t know who. Creepy fella, black robes.” Courier leaves.

They look at the note.

‘To captain Brantus of the Mermaids Tear.

It has come to my attention you have recently found the ring. It is also come to my attention that you may have killed a very mysterious beast. The ring holds more knowledge and power than you can even imagine. All I say is this: use it well.

T.N.’

“Well, that’s creepy.” Says Li.

Ursula examines the ring. She decides to slip it onto her finger.

“Tada!” She says.

All of a sudden she hears a voice in her head. “You have bested me in fair battle.” In a mysterious language Ursula somehow understands. “You now wield the ability to summon me in your desperate time of need. Use it wisely. Use it well.”

Ursula quickly figures out the ring can summon the kraken! But only while she is close to water obviously.

Ursula smiles.

“Did you notice anything happen?” Asks Brantus.

“Might have. Not sure.” Answers the witch. “Got a bit of a tingle actually. Going to find a drink.” Ursula goes to find an alcoholic beverage from the outpost.

Sam the Hobbit Chef, barman of the Sharp Axe Inn hires four adventurers to retrieve a wooden chest purportedly floating off the shore some way from here to the NorthWest. The chest is said to contain a magical Trident which can control the sea. They will be paid 3000 gold between them for returning the trident to him.

OUTSIDE THE INN

Brantus approaches the Inn, his ship recently docked in the port.

“Papers” asserts the Door Guard.

Brantus asks if he doesn’t recognise his famous beard and swarthy reputation as an honest merchant.

The door guard calls him a pirate and says no pirates allowed.

Brantus shows him papers from the Sailors Guild which say he is an honest trader.

Brantus asks the Guards for their papers because he doesn’t know if they’re on the Inn payroll or simply loitering outside the front of the building.

Guards call for Sam the Hobbit Chef out of the Inn who verifies the Guards are genuine.

IN THE INN

Brantus enters the inn and looks at everyone in there, looking beyond the two sexy dancers near the doorway who bring punters into the Inn to spend money on beer and decides to approach instead two other women who are talking at a table.

Brantus has mind to hire them if they’re willing, he needs new crew for his ship since docking some of the old crew have left and he’s short. Besides these two look like adventurers which is useful.

Brantus at the bar asks Sam the Chef for a bottle of fine wine and lays 2 coins for it. He takes it to the women’s table and asks if he can join them to share the wine.

Old Barmaid asks if there is anything they need. Brantus asks if the women have eaten in the past few days and offers to buy them food. The food today is Rabbit-Bear stew, freshly caught.

Rabbit-Bears are a problem, they jump on roofs of houses and collapse them, it’s why the town is rebuilt of stone now ever since they moved into the area and it’s why there are so many old ruins all over the place.

The two women are Li the civilised barbarian and Ursula a nature witch.

As they eat their meal and drink the wine, they overhear Archer ask Sam if there is any work going.

Sam tells a story about a wooden chest containing a magical trident with power to control the sea, to be found to the NorthWest. Sam wants it and will pay handsomely for it 3000 gold coins.

Brantus asks Sam to prove he has the money. Sam retrieves a chest and shows him the money. Brantus asks how nobody robs him. Sam reminds him of the guards outside the Inn. Brantus concedes.

AT THE COAST

The party arrives at a ruined stone building and paved area which has steps leading down to the sea. The building is on a cliff top. Between them and the building is an old stone bridge over a rift which is filled with water.

Brantus accidentally steps on a gravestone. There are many gravestones here. The gravestone is thrown open. A zombie climbs out. Brantus steps back behind Li, the warrior woman he has hired to protect him.

“Who dares disturb the rest of the dead?” Asks a GraveGuard from close by, surprising them.

“Oh no we’re surrounded by zombies!” Says Brantus. “Quick, kill them!”

Li chops a zombi in half with one stroke of her greatsword because the combat system in Brains&Brawn is fast and lethal. A combat is resolved with two comparative dice rolls, the result of which is the difference is deducted from the losers Brawn points. The gory damage is explained through storytelling.

“Hey how dare you desecrate the graves! That corpse is the great great grandfather of the Kings cousin!” Shouts the angry GraveGuard. He pushes Brantus.

Brantus places his small pistol crossbow in the GraveGuards mouth and pulls the trigger. The guy is instantly dead.

“Hey!” Shouts another GraveGuard from the far end of the bridge. “How dare you go around murdering the Kings Guards protecting this graveyard and the respectable ancestors buried here!”

“Another zombie! Kill the other zombi!” Shouts Brantus.

Li charges over and again, slices the GraveGuard in half.

“You know what? I don’t think all of them are zombies.” Says Archer.

“Nobody cares. Let’s throw all the bodies in the sea before they get up and cause us any more problems.” Brantus walks over the bridge. As soon as he gets half way a small gangrenous looking creature with horns, spindly arms and legs and a fat round body bounces over and cackles at him.

“Oh dear! Yuck what is that atrocious thing?”

Li drop kicks the creature into the ruins where it lands on the top of a spiral stairwell descending into the ground and bounces down the steps.

“Nice!”

Abruptly a small swarm of the creatures acting as one pounce toward Li and Brantus.

“Not nice!”

Li hacks at the creatures as they jibber about not crossing their bridge. They’re fast and function as a swarm, although she strikes one it barely slows their attack.

Archer shouts over, to look behind them. He notched his bow. Behind them a huge version of the same GraveGremlins, the MotherGraveGremlin, is approaching. It is angry that the characters are desecrating their graveyard.

Ursula runs over to stand in the middle of the bridge. Using her power she shines a green light around which repels undead creatures. The swarm are caught inside the light, instantly they crumble to dust. The MotherGraveGremlin retreats back to wherever she came from, fading as she sinks into the ground.

“Wow!”

The team explore the ruin. Brantus waits with Archer while the women descend into the spiral stairway. Moments later they return.

“This place is old. Landslide and rain have blocked the passage.”

“Hey look over there, out at sea there is a chest floating. It must be the one Sam the Hobbit Chef hired us to find!” Says Archer who has been looking out to sea.

The team move along the cliff edge to the steps and descend. Brantus instructs everyone to get ready in case anything bad is in the water. He waded toward the chest. Sure enough a Sea Beast is seen heading toward him.

Archer peppers it with arrows so Brantus pulls its body to the steps which descend further down into the water. Then he retrieves the chest. Made of wood it floats however it was tethered to a rope. He cuts the rope and they haul it up the steps to open it.

Inside the chest is a small Sea Dragon which flutters up and circles around the chest within reach of the group.

“If anyone harms it I will kill you!” Shouts Ursula. She makes cooing noises and mumbles gleefully “aw how cute” and “it’s lovely!” Then she uses her magic again to place an enchantment on the Sea Dragon to make it like her. It lands in her arms, she hugs onto it as grips her and smiles, moving its head around her face happily.

The team discuss the lack of a trident in the chest. Ursula decided to name the baby sea dragon “Trident.”

Ursula asks the baby’s sea dragon “Where is the trident? Go fetch us the trident, boy.” The creature flies into the air and back the way they came.

The team decide to make a camp, recover their energy and roast up the dead sea monster for their dinner. They discuss returning to Sam the hobbit chef and demand he pay them anyway for the hardships they’ve faced on his behalf, at least some of the promised money, despite the rumoured trident not being there after all.

After two hours of exploring the area, resting, discussing their plan, they hear a shriek from the skies and are surprised to see the baby dragon return with the fat hobbit Sam the Chef in its claws!

The dragon drops Sam down between them. He is understandably angry and upset. After calming him down and preventing him from attacking the baby sea dragon, they interrogate Sam about the situation.

The fat angry hobbit explains he was simply serving at the bar when the dragon flew in, grabbed him, dragged him outside and flew away with him through a cold windy journey for the longest time until it dropped him down here.

The team explain to Sam that the Dragon flew out of the chest he has employed them to find, but there is no trident.

Sam is still annoyed and attempts to attack the dragon again. The party protect the dragon and tell Sam to calm down. Then they ask him if he still intends to pay them anything for all the danger they have gone through.

Sam explains that with no trident they have failed their mission so he owes them nothing. They explain they still at least checked out the rumour he sent them to investigate. They ask how he knew anything about the chest in the first place.

Sam says he hates adventurers because there are too many of them. He’s had it up to his eyeballs with their filthy kind bringing problems and dirt into his establishment the Inn which he wants to maintain a more upmarket clientele and as far as he is concerned getting rid of a few adventurers by sending them on some damn fool quest would be doing the world a good favour.

The adventurers are quite taken aback by this and decide they’re going to collect on Sam’s promise of payment regardless of his lying to them in an attempt to get them killed.

Sam attacks the group, at which time he is unfortunately one-shot killed in vague circumstances. They decide to feed his body to the fish or whatever other creatures might still be lurking over the cliff-side.

The Dragon which has been watching and occasionally appears to have been listening to the exchange is excited about something. It grabs hold of Ursula and swoops her up into the air out over the ocean some way before dragging her down beneath the sea.

Having rested the witch has sufficient power to protect herself from drowning by forming an air bubble around her whole body large enough for her to breathe safely underwater for an amount of time.

The dragon pulls her down to a shipwreck which contains a chest. Ursula prises the lid open and discovers inside a large blue trident which ripples like the sea. She recognises it immediately to be the one from Sam’s story and grabs hold of it. The baby sea dragon whisks her out of the ocean just in time for the last of her air bubble to disappear.

Back at the camp at the cliff-side ruins Ursula shows the trident to the team. As she dries by the campfire they discuss who amongst them should own it.

“Brantus has a ship. If it is true what Sam claimed that the trident of the sea god Poseidon can control the sea somehow, then it stands to logic he would benefit from it the most.”

“Aye but what about the rest of us?” Asks Archer.

“The rest of us can all be paid after returning to the Inn because witnesses there saw the deal we made with Sam to reclaim it. We’ve fulfilled our mission.”

AT THE INN

The wizards are still arguing this time about whether it was a baby sea dragon or a baby fire dragon they had watched fly in and grab the Inn owner and fly off with him.

Other staff of the establishment help Sam to make good on his deal by agreeing to give the team the chest of coins they have won. They even help haul it to Brantus ship.

Ursula remains outside with the baby sea dragon to avoid anyone from the in. Recognising it and suspecting foul play. The team say what a pity  it is Sam is not there to make good on his promise of paying them, but they have to sail with the tide so they have no time to waste waiting for his unlikely return.

Archer decides stay with the group. Brantus hires her too. He now has three capable adventurer women on his payroll.
